Spring Spotlight: Carter King (Senior | Mount Airy, Ga.), Baseball
- What was the decision process like in choosing the Rhodes? What ultimately helped persuade your decision?
My college decision was a wild one, but it ultimately came down to attending Rhodes vs. attending the University of Georgia or Georgia Tech. For me, it came down to whether I wanted to go to school cheaply and give up varsity athletics, or come to Rhodes and play both baseball and football and a greater financial cost. In the end, obviously, the opportunity to continue my athletic career and receive a great education won me over.
- What is it about your team/program do you like best?
The baseball team is a family in every sense of the word. Each person owns their role to the best of their ability, and when this clicks it is something special, which can be seen in our success this year.
- Do you have a favorite memory or memories?
Over spring break, Ralph French hit a game-winning single to complete the comeback in a JV game. Ralph is an unsung hero who primarily catches in the bullpen, but you never hear him complain or seem upset. The team's love and respect for Ralph could be seen when the entire team stormed the field to dogpile and celebrate with Ralph. I'd say that's not something that commonly happens in a JV baseball game.
- Is there any specific play or performance that sticks out in your mind across your career, whether it involve you or was a teammate's accomplishment?
This season was filled with comeback and walk-off wins, whether it came off the bat of Will Heurtin, Chris Penna, or Ralph French, this team clawed until the very last out.
- What advice would you give to an underclassman teammate?
Don't take any of the time you spend with your team for granted. Find a way to enjoy every moment regardless of how stressed or emotional you may be on a given day. The baseball field is a sacred place and deserves your full attention.
- Do you have any social distancing advice, games, or ideas to help people pass the time?
I personally have not played it, but I think people should bring back Dance Dance Revolution, so that they stay inside but are also active.
- Must go-to Memphis restaurants or places to check out?
Go to Bhan Thai on Peabody Ave. for lunch. It's the unsung hero.
