Memphis - Overtime wasn't really an option Wednesday night as the women's lacrosse game between Rhodes and Roanoke came down to the final 20 seconds of the game. Any longer and the sun would have dipped behind the trees, leaving teams in the dark on Mason Field.
In a game which saw nine ties, Rhodes held the largest lead at three goals with a minute left in the first half. The Lynx would hold on for the 16-15 victory thanks to an 18-7 save advantage as senior
Lauren Lazure made 18 saves in cage for the Lynx, tying her single-game career-high.
Rhodes started the game with two goals on their way to a 4-2 lead with 21:28 left in the first half. The Maroons rebounded with three unanswered goals including the final free position goal in a man-down situation to lead 5-4. A 2-1 Lynx scoring advantage tied the game 6-6 until three different Lynx scored to give the hosts a 9-6 lead. Roanoke closed the first half with two goals in the final 39 seconds before the break.
The teams rotated scoring sets of two goals until Roanoke led 12-11. A 3-1 Rhodes run put the Lynx ahead briefly (14-13) with 10:30 to go as darkness started to settle. Less than a minute later the Maroons notched a goal to tie the game for the final time. After four and a half minutes of scoreless lacrosse,
Baylee Barker gave Rhodes the lead for good with 5:04 left in the game. Barker then took the ball straight to the cage to give Rhodes a two-goal lead with 1:44 remaining. The Maroons pulled within one on a free position shot with 18 seconds left. Possession on the ensuing draw control was key and Lynx sophomore
Payton Bennett battled for possession and was fouled, allowing the Lynx to run out the clock to secure the victory.
During the second half, Emerson Foster of Roanoke recorded her second yellow card of the game with 24:54 left, making it impossible for her to return to the field. Foster led the Maroons with four goals and also tallied four draw controls.
Lazure made 10 saves in the first half and eight in the second half, totaling a .545 save percentage. Barker led the Lynx with seven goals and seven draw controls.
Aidan Pike and
Carina Wesker both recorded hat tricks while Bennett scored twice. Bennett and
Emily Bruner each assisted twice while Pike and
Madison Rubino each added an assist as well. The final scorer for the Lynx was
Aubrey Gray who scored on her only shot.
Overall the Lynx made 16-of-28 shots while Roanoke connected on 18-of-36. Each team recorded 16 draw controls and Roanoke held an 18-13 ground ball advantage.
