No. 12 Lynx Defeat Westfield State 7-5 in Second Contest of Spring Break Play

Auburndale - The No. 12 Rhodes College Lynx continued their play on their Spring Break trip against Westfield State Thursday evening. A big four run second inning gave the Lynx the edge they needed to down the Owls 5-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Bottom of 1st inning: The Owls jumped out to an early lead as they capitalized off of three base knocks and three defensive errors (2-0).

Top of 2nd inning: The Lynx answered right back with a big inning of their own. Things got started with a John McNair single to left field. Chris Penna followed with a walk. Ben Wilson hit a single through the right side to load the bases for the Lynx. John Medich hit a ground ball to the third baseman which led to two runs scoring after the fielder misplayed the grounder (2-2). Willard Overstreet followed that up with a deep enough fly ball to center field which plated another run for Rhodes (3-2). Peter York scorched a double to right field bringing home the last run of the inning (4-2).

Bottom of 7th inning: Westfield State chipped away at the lead as a single to left center brought home their third run of the ballgame (4-3).

Top of 8th inning: A Penna big fly to left center extended the Lynx lead, which ended up being the final score of the ballgame (5-3). Medich recorded a base knock in the inning.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Nick Ferazzi kept the Owls in check as he started on the mound tossing three innings and holding them to two runs (zero earned). He struck out two batters in the process.
  • Chayton Gray improved to 2-0 on the mound as he threw 3.2 innings in relief. He held Westfield State to a single run, five hits, while striking out six hitters. John Fears and Garrett combined for a scoreless 2.1 innings. Garrett picked up his second save of the season.
  • McNair led the Lynx with three hits in the ballgame, while recording his first double of the season. Will Heurtin tallied two hits.
  • York, Penna, Medich, and Overstreet recorded one RBI each.
  • Penna smashed his fourth home run of the season.
