Women's Lacrosse Starts Season Off Hot With 20-3 Victory Over Southwestern

Memphis - Rhodes College women's lacrosse scored 43 seconds into their season opener against the Southwestern University Pirates. The Lynx held a 14-0 first half shutout before defeating Southwestern 20-3 as 11 Lynx scored a goal. 

Aidan Pike scored the first goal of the season before Baylee Barker recorded three straight goals in two minutes of play. The Lynx went up 9-0 after 18 minutes of play when freshman Emily Bruner recorded her first career goal on an assist from fellow classmate Carina Wesker, also a first career mark. Freshman Ashley Caruana earned her first career assist on Rhodes' next goal from KK Mulholland before she scored the 13th goal of the game. Her first career goal came with 3:39 left in the first half in a man-down situation. 

Rhodes opened the second half with five goals before Southwestern scored three straight in a span of 12 minutes to avoid a shutout. Wesker recorded her first career goal in the final goal of the game with 1:15 remaining. 

During the game the Lynx took 33 shots and scored on 20 of 28 on goal. The Lynx held a 23-17 ground ball advantage and went 15-of-17 in clears. Southwestern committed 27 turnovers to Rhodes' 15 while the Pirates edged the Lynx in draw controls 15-10.

Individually, sophomore Payton Bennett recorded career-highs of nine points, six assists and four caused turnovers while adding three goals and four ground balls to her totals in the game. Her three goals came on four shots while Pike led the game with five goals on six shots. In the midfield, Barker tallied four goals on four shots, one assist, a career-high four caused turnovers, and four ground balls. Recording half of Rhodes' draw controls (five) was Izzy Parker. Others tallying one goal each in the game were Parker, Madison Rubino, Sarah Delahunt and Aubrey Gray.

Rhodes will not compete again until they host Colorado College on February 21 at 3 p.m. That following Sunday the Lynx will also host Ill. Wesleyan at noon.
