Comeback Bid Falls Short for Lynx Against No. 15/17 Colorado College

Memphis - The Colorado College Tigers snuck away from Mason Field with a win Friday afternoon in their season opener. The Lynx fall to 1-1 after the tough 9-8 loss.

It was a yellow card kind of day in the highly contested battle with Rhodes starting the game a man down just 66 seconds into the game. The shortage didn't seem to matter as the Lynx scored 45 seconds later to net the first man-down goal of the game. The Tigers rebounded with four straight goals over the next 5 minutes before the Lynx posted three consecutive to end the first half. Of Rhodes' four goals, freshman Emily Bruner knotched two in a row after Izzy Parker scored first and Baylee Barker finished with a goal with 31 seconds left in the half to tie the game 4-4.

Colorado College opened the second half on a 3-2 run but two straight goals gave the Tigers a 9-6 lead with 14:40 to play. After a scoreless 11 minutes and 30 seconds, Madison Rubino scored with 3:10 remaining. The Lynx pushed hard in the final minutes and forced two turnovers. A save from Lynx senior Lauren Lazure sparked a fast break for the Lynx with 25 seconds left. Barker earned a free position shot and scored the final goal of the game with 0.9 seconds left as the Lynx ran out of time to catch the Tigers.

Lazure stopped multiple 1v1 situations and tallied 14 saves in the game. Barker finished with the game-high four goals while Bruner tallied two goals, one assist and four ground balls. Rubino added four ground balls and an assist to her totals while Carina Wesker also recorded four ground balls. Freshman Ashlee Caurana totaled the game-high five ground balls while she and Rubino tallied two caused turnovers.

Rhodes is back in action Sunday against No. 20-ranked Illinois Wesleyan at noon on Mason Field.
