Memphis - On a cold, rainy Sunday, Rhodes College women's lacrosse came back from a 7-5 halftime deficit to defeat No. 20-ranked Illinois Wesleyan 12-11.
Rhodes jumped out to a 2-0 lead before IWU went on a 3-1 run which included two 8-meter shots to tie the game. Rhodes led 5-3 midway through the first half until the Titans pulled within one and then tied the game on a man-up goal. It would be their only man-up goal of the game, despite Rhodes accumulating five yellow cards. The Titans finished the half with two more goals, including one with 43 seconds before the break.
The Lynx throttled into gear during the second half and came out hot as
Aidan Pike scored just 22 seconds after the break. IWU increased their lead to two again before back-to-back goals from
Baylee Barker tied the game 8-8 with 24:26 remaining. The Titans scored as Rhodes received their fourth yellow card of the game, forcing the Lynx to serve two-minute non-releasable yellow cards for the remainder of the game. The first didn't seem to matter as Pike scored while in the man-down situation.
IWU tied the game with 16:32 to go, but three straight goals from the Lynx gave the hosts a 12-10 lead with 7:18 to play. IWU pulled within one with 20 seconds left, earned the draw, and was fouled near the top of the 12m arc, as time was winding down, but the Titans were offsides, ultimating ending the game as the Lynx ran down the clock.
Barker finished the game with five goals, five ground balls, five draw controls, three caused turnovers and an assist. Pike netted a hat trick while
Emily Bruner,
Payton Bennett,
KK Mulholland and
Carina Wesker knotted one goal each. Mulholland also tallied three caused turnovers while
Izzy Parker earned three draw controls and
Hannah Swinerton four ground balls.
Tied 5-5, freshman
Emma Bradley entered the cage for the Lynx. Bradley picked up her first collegiate victory, stopping seven Titan shots and earning a caused turnover.
Rhodes will play a neutral-site game against Washington & Lee on Wednesday. The game will be hosted at Harpeth Hall in Nashville, Tenn. at 6 p.m.
