Lynx Roll Over BSC After Posting 24-6 Fourth Quarter Advantage

Birmingham, Ala. - Rhodes College women's basketball outscored the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers 24-6 to regain control of their second-to-last game of the regular season. The run pushed Rhodes to a 70-50 victory as the Lynx improve to 14-9 on the season and 9-4 in conference.

With the game tied 5-5, Rhodes broke open the game with an eight-point run on their way to a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter where the Lynx took advantage of six Panther turnovers. In the second quarter the Panthers cut Rhodes' 11-point lead to three with less than a minute left until the break after a 12-4 run. The Lynx held a 32-27 halftime edge, led by Maya Longacre's 10 points, six of which came in the second quarter, while Alli Mayeux recorded eight points and four rebounds.  

During the third quarter a 6-2 Lynx run put Rhodes ahead by nine but the Panthers responded with seven unanswered points on their way to an 11-2 run to tie the game 40-40. BSC led by one after a field goal with 2:50 left in the quarter before the Lynx led 46-44 before the final 10 minutes of play. 

BSC opened the fourth quarter with a steal and fast break layup, but the Lynx posted 12 straight points, seven from Longacre to go up by 12. After the Panthers converted a free throw, Rhodes scored 10 in a row for a 22-1 run to take a 21-point lead with 1:26 remaining. During the fourth quarter the Lynx went 9-of-16 for a 56.25 field goal percentage while BSC connected on just two of 16 field goals.

Longacre finished the game with a career-high 23 points while the junior also grabbed seven rebounds. She scored 11 of those points in the fourth quarter going 5-of-6 in the field. On the afternoon she went 11-of-14 in the field with two steals and a block. Sophomore Alli Mayeux recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds while also adding two blocks and a steal. Senior Alyssa Owens also tallied 11 points going 3-of-6 from three-point range. Caroline Taylor recorded five assists. 

During the game, the Lynx went 4-of-13 from the arc but totaled a 40.3 overall shooting percentage and out-rebounded the Panthers 50-40 which included 23 offensive boards. BSC shot 32.3 percent in the game and made 2-of-16 three-point attempts, blanking on nine second-half shots from the arc. 

BSC's Emilee Olsen totaled 19 points and 12 rebounds while Derienne Black also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Rhodes will head back to Memphis to host Hendrix College for Senior Day on Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m.
