Lynx Split Double-Header Against Huntingdon College

Montgomery, Ala. - The Lynx from Rhodes College and the Huntingdon College Hawks squared up against each other for a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. Each team took a game on the day to split the series. The Hawks took game one with a final score of 6-3 and the Lynx took game two 8-3.


GAME 1:

Rhodes College 3 (0-2), Huntingdon College 6 (2-0)

WP: Brooks Freeman (1-0) LP: John Medich (0-1) S: John Crawford (2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Top of 1st inning: Paul Giacomazzi led off the game with a double to left center, Peter York legged out a single to the pitcher, which advanced Giacomazzi to third, and Wood Kimbrough brought in the game's first run as he grounded out to the shortstop to plate Giacomazzi (1-0).

Bottom of 2nd inning: The Hawks plated five runs in the bottom half of the second, all coming from errors, walks, or wild pitches. Three runs came home from throwing errors, one from a walk, and one from a wild pitch (5-1).

Top of 7th inning: Will Huertin singled up the middle to score Gunnar Vachris, who reached earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice (5-2).

Bottom of 7th inning: HC added another run to their total on a single to left field (6-2).

Top of 8th inning: Rhodes chipped away at the lead when David Roos scorched a single to left center to plate Ben Wilson. This brought the final run in of the ballgame (6-3).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Lynx outhit the Hawks 8-4.
  • Giacomazzi and Roos tallied two hits in the ballgame. Huertin, York, Kimbrough, and Wilson recorded one each.
  • Rhodes left five more runners on base than Huntingdon (10-5).
  • Trey Sledge threw five innings in relief, while holding the opposing hitters to only two base knocks and one run, while striking out three batters.


GAME 2:

Rhodes College 8 (1-2), Huntingdon College 3 (2-1)

WP: Alex Garrett (1-0) LP: Wallace Henry (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Top of 2nd inning: Wilson singled through the right side to set the table for Chris Penna. Penna homered to left field to give the Lynx the early lead (2-0).

Top of 6th inning: Singles from Huertin and York placed runners on first and second with Kimbrough coming to the plate. Kimbrough cleared the bases with a three run homer to extend Rhodes' lead (5-0).

Top of 7th inning: A Giacomazzi single to right field plated Nick Rachlin who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning (6-0). Kimbrough struck again with a single to left field, which brought in two Lynx baserunners (8-0).

Bottom of 7th inning: Huntingdon was able to string together a few hits, which led to the Hawks chipping away at the lead. This happened to be the last scoring play of the game (8-3).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • 20 base hits (combined) were recorded in the ball game. Rhodes finished the game with 11 and HC ended with nine base knocks.
  • Nathan Mirochnick started the game for the Lynx. He tossed two innings, allowing one hit, zero runs, and struck out five Hawks.
  • Garrett threw four innings of work in relief. He held the Hawks to three hits and no runs, while also striking out an opposing batter.
  • Four Rhodes hitters recorded a two-hit ballgame (Huertin, Kimbrough, Wilson, and Penna). Kimbrough (four) and Penna (two) also tallied multiple RBI's as well. 
  • Seven of the nine starters for Rhodes tallied a base hit.
  • Kimbrough and Penna finished the game with a homer each.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lynx are schedule to take on crosstown rival Christian Brothers University on Wed., Feb. 12th. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Stauffer Field. Fans should stay tuned to the schedule page and social media for weather updates.
