Birmingham, Ala. - Rhodes College men's basketball fell to Birmingham-Southern 80-67 on the road Sunday after averaging 46.7 percent in the field. The Lynx fall to 5-19 on the year and 2-11 in conference play. BSC is now 8-16 overall and 4-9 in the SAA.
First half play was back and forth with the score tied 12 times before the Panthers held a 33-32 edge at halftime. During that first half Lynx freshman
Koki Wiley led both teams with 11 points and six rebounds. Despite the score, and both teams sinking 15 field goals, BSC held a 21-9 rebounding advantage over the Lynx.
The game was tied for the final time (37-37) just a minute and a half into the second half. BSC led 55-50 with 12:08 to play when the hosts went on a 9-2 run to lead by 12 points with 8:11 to go. Rhodes cut the deficit to five on a
Wiley Pippenger jump shot with 2:48 remaining, but the Panthers closed the game on a 9-1 run.Â
During the second half both teams made 13 field goals but the Lynx picked up their seventh foul with about 11 minutes to go. BSC took advantage and sank 18-of-20 attempts to hold a 47-35 second half advantage.Â
Wiley led Rhodes with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists while
Jake Nestlehutt scored 14 points and
Kevin Shen 10 points. Nestlehutt went 4-of-7 from three-point range and Shen led the Lynx with three steals.Â
BSC had four Panthers record double digits including 26 from Christian Stewart.Â
Rhodes will return to Mallory Gymnasium Saturday for a 4 p.m. game against Hendrix College. Ten minutes before the game the Lynx will honor their six seniors.
