Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Heartbreaking Loss for the Lynx as Comeback Bid at Millsaps Falls Short

Jackson, Miss. - After Millsaps held a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter, Rhodes tied the game with 19 seconds left. The Lynx then stole the ball back immediately, but a missed jumper followed by a Major defensive rebound and Lynx foul, sent Millsaps to the free throw line with two seconds remaining in regulation. Dia Fortenberry sank her first free throw attempt to win the game despite a Rhodes defensive rebound on her next attempt. Millsaps came away with the 62-61 victory despite turning the ball over 18 times.

Millsaps jumped out to a 6-2 lead until the Lynx tied the game 8-8 and finished the first quarter on a 10-4 run to lead 18-12. Rhodes opened the second quarter with a Kiera Downey jumper to take an eight-point advantage. Millsaps then went on a 13-4 run before the Lynx finished the first half on a 7-2 run to lead 31-27.

In the third quarter tied 35-35, Millsaps took the lead with five straight points on their way to a 14-2 run which included a three-pointer just before the end of the third quarter. With the Majors ahead by 12 (49-37), the hosts went up by 13 with 7:30 to go. Back-to-back treys from the Lynx by Alyssa Owens and Alli Mayeux brought Rhodes within seven with 5:32 remaining. A 5-2 run cut the lead to four before Millsaps went ahead by seven (61-54) with just over a minute left. Millsaps fouled Ellen Hagen after she stole the ball which sparked seven straight points for the Lynx. Hagen sank her two free throws before freshman Alexys Mathangani roped in a defensive rebound. Owens came up with an offensive rebound and ensuing layup with 30 seconds left to pull the Lynx within three. Mathangani grabbed another defensive board after Fortenberry missed two free throws when Owens found an open Downey who drained the game-tying trey right in front of the Lynx bench. In a big moment, Mayeux forced a turnover and jump ball which gave the Lynx possession with 14 seconds remaining. A missed shot from the Lynx found it's way into Fortenberry's hards before the Lynx were charged a foul and Fortenberry sank the winning free throw with two seconds left.

Millsaps shot 48.1% in the field compared to Rhodes' 34.9%. The Majors also outrebounded the Lynx 45-32. Millsaps' 22-6 third quarter advantage was due in part to Rhodes going 1-of-11 in the field.

Downey led the game with 16 points and six rebounds while Owens finished with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Mayeux recorded 10 points and seven rebounds while Taya Lee totaled seven points and Mathangani five points and five rebounds.

The Lynx are now tied with Centre for second place in league play (8-4). Rhodes travels to Birmingham-Southern for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday.
