Atlanta, Ga. – Rhodes men's basketball fell to Oglethorpe 77-68 after a 42-29 first half deficit, despite edging the Stormy Petrel's 39-35 in the second half.
Rhodes trailed 7-4 until the Lynx scored five points in a row to lead 9-7, however an Oglethorpe 10-2 run opened the game. Rhodes cut their lead to one with five straight points, but the Stormy Petrels responded with six unanswered points to lead 23-16. Ten points in a row gave Oglethorpe a 12-point lead with four minutes left in the first half, which the Lynx cut to six, however the hosts went into halftime with a 42-29 advantage.
During the first half,
Jake Nestlehutt led the Lynx with nine points, going 3-of-5 from three-point range. Meanwhile,
Koki Wiley led the boards with six rebounds. Two stormy Petrels, Dimetri Chambers and Josh Cammon combined for 30 of their team's points going 11-of-15. Oglethorpe shot 53.5% in the field compared to Rhodes' 37.9% accuracy.
Rhodes pulled within six (51-45) of the Stormy Petrels after a 14-1 run in the beginning of the second half, which included four consecutive three-pointers from the Lynx. Eight straight points from Oglethorpe put the Stormy Petrels ahead by 14 points but five points in a row pulled Rhodes back within range with five minutes left. Oglethorpe continued to inch away, maintaining about a 10-point lead for the remainder of the game. Rhodes and Oglethorpe almost reversed shooting accuracies in the second half as the Lynx averaged .500 in the field while Oglethorpe averaged .367.
Wiley finished the game with 20 points including five treys on eight attempts, followed by
Jalen Essick (14) and Nestlehutt (11).
Preston Giroux tallied four steals and Wiley added six rebounds and four assists to his totals.
For Oglethorpe, Chambers finished the game with 26 points and Cammon a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Rhodes will end non-conference play for the year at in Columbus, Miss. on Tuesday. The Lynx will take on Mississippi University for Women at 6 p.m.
