Memphis - The Rhodes College women's basketball team fell behind in the first quarter to Centre College before tying the game 26-26 at halftime. A third quarter 22-12 Lynx advantage followed by a 16-10 fourth quarter edge lifted Rhodes over the Colonels. The 64-48 victory is the eighth for the Lynx in their last 10 games. The win pushes Rhodes to 7-2 in league play while BSC and Centre are tied for third and fourth with 5-4 conference records.
After Rhodes held a 9-5 lead to start the game, Centre went on a 12-1 run to lead 17-10 after the first 10 minutes. The Colonels led 24-19 with 2:42 left in the half until five straight Lynx points tied the game. Each team secured two more points before the break. The Lynx opened the second half on a 9-1 run which included five points and a block from
Maya Longacre as well as four points from
Caroline Taylor. Rhodes eventually extended their lead to 13 in the quarter and held a 48-38 advantage headed into the final frame. Six unanswered points to open the fourth quarter gave the Lynx a 16-point lead until Centre cut that down to 11 with 1:51 to play. Rhodes, however, finished the game with five free throws to once again go up by 16 points.Â
Longacre scored nine of her 12 points in the second half, recorded two blocks alongside
Alexys Mathangani and was one of three Lynx to grab seven rebounds. The other two included
Alyssa Owens and
Taya Lee.
Kiera Downey also hit double digits with 12 points while
Alli Mayeux led the game with eight rebounds. Owens tallied the game-high 14 points and also recorded three steals. Owens needed just eight points in the game to record her 1,000th point as a Lynx. Having achieved her 1,000th career point earlier this year, she now has 1,065 career points.Â
Rhodes will conclude their four-game home stand this weekend with games inside Mallory against Berry on Friday (6 p.m.) and Oglethorpe on Sunday (1 p.m.).
