Slow First Half Ends In Tough Loss for Lynx at Centre

Danville, Ky. – Rhodes College women's basketball completed their first half of conference play Sunday at Centre College where the Lynx suffered a tough 60-55 loss. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Lynx who recorded their lowest points of the season.

Rhodes won the tip-off and a back-door cut from Kiera Downey got scoring started just 11 seconds into the game. A 4-0 Lynx lead turned into a 12-5 advantage before the Colonels called a timeout with 3:10 left in the first quarter. The Lynx held a seven-point advantage after 10 minutes of play.

Second quarter turnovers (four) and missed shots (10) held the Lynx to only six points during the next 10 minutes. Centre scored 12 points during the quarter, which included a seven-point run to take the lead with 1:15 before the half. After a quick timeout from head coach Rodney Rogan, Maya Longacre rolled in a layup to regain the lead. The Lynx led 20-19 at halftime.

Rhodes rebounded from a .262 shooting percentage in the first half by opening the second half with a 10-1 run in less than three minutes of play. Leading 31-21, the Lynx accumulated their fifth foul with 5:34 left in the quarter. Rhodes finally connected on their first trey of the day when Libby Long roped in an offensive rebound deep in the corner and sent the outlet to Ellen Hagan who drained the long ball to put the Lynx ahead by 10 once again. The Colonels responded with eight consecutive points to pull within two with a minute left in the third quarter. Centre got possession of an offensive rebound and tied the game 38-38. Rhodes scored 18 points during the third quarter, two points shy of their entire first half score while Centre scored 19, tying their first half points.

The teams exchanged baskets throughout the fourth quarter until Centre earned seven straight points for a six-point (51-45) lead with four minutes left in the game. Rhodes cut the lead to four after Downey sank a free throw after Centre's leading forward Mikayla Fee picked up her fifth foul. Two consecutive offensive boards for the Colonels ended with a three-pointer which gave the hosts a 55-48 advantage with 2:11 to go.

A Downey layup and two free throws from Hagan pulled Rhodes within three with 1:09 to go. Centre burned down the clock and connected on a layup with 40 seconds left to go back up by five. Centre then blocked a Rhodes three-point attempt and went to the line after the Lynx were forced to foul on the defensive rebound. The Colonels missed both free throws when Owens drew a foul on a layup attempt with 30 seconds left. She made her second free throw when Centre called a timeout to advance the ball, forcing Rhodes to foul. Centre made a free throw but a Downey fast break layup pulled Rhodes within three with 11 seconds left, forcing Centre to use their final timeout. The Colonels then sank their final two free throws to end the game.
