Sewanee, Tenn. - Rhodes men's basketball fell victim to Sewanee 75-66 on the road Friday.
The Lynx took an early 7-6 lead until the Tigers scored 16 unanswered points to open the game. Rhodes later trailed 27-9 before the Lynx put up nine straight points to trail by nine with seven minutes to play in the first half. Sewanee led 34-20 at halftime after shooting 53.6 percent in the field.
Rhodes came back in the second half and cut that lead to two points. After only scoring 20 points in the first half, the Lynx scored 19 points in nine minutes which included an 11– 0 run.The Lynx were charged with back-to-back offensive fouls but Rhodes responded with a defensive rebound and fast break from
Mac James to tie the game with under 12 minutes to play. The teams tied again 49-49 with 7:30 left but an eight-point run gave the Tigers a 57-49 lead with 5:26 to go.
Rhodes cut that lead to five however consecutive baskets from Sewanee put the hosts ahead by double digits (10). A
Koki Wiley three-pointer cut the lead to six before a Lynx steal and
Jalen Essick layup put Rhodes within four points with 44 seconds left. With Rhodes forced to foul, Sewanee connected on two free throws to lead by seven with 29 seconds left, which Rhodes cut to five with 23 seconds remaining on a Weatherford layup. Four more Sewanee free throws sealed the win. During the final 20 minutes of play, both teams shot over 56 percent in the field.
Wiley led Rhodes with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. Weatherford totaled 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists while
Jalen Essick (13) and
Mac James (12) both recorded double digits as well.
Owen Galvin grabbed six rebounds and three steals as well.
The Lynx travel to Centre on Sunday for a 3 p.m. ET tip-off.
