Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Holds On to Beat BSC

Memphis - Rhodes College men's basketball broke a seven-game skid after an 85-80 victory over Birmingham-Southern Sunday. The win is the first for the Lynx of the new year and first in conference play, while the Panthers are now 0-5 against SAA opponents and have now lost five straight games.

Rhodes' 35-26 halftime advantage ultimately propelled the Lynx to victory as BSC held a 54-50 second half advantage. During the game Rhodes recorded a season-low eight turnovers while the Lynx shot their best in the field and behind the arc (11-of-24) since November.

The teams were tied 15-all before Rhodes went on a 10-1 run in the middle of the first half before eventually leading by 11 right before the break. A jump shot put BSC within three with 15:42 to play but a 9-2 run which included three straight three-pointers from the Lynx gave Rhodes a 10-point lead once again. Rhodes led by five with 7:47 to go when Rhodes went on a 19-8 run to take a 16-point lead (77-61) with 2:55 remaining. During those five minutes, Mac James and Preston Giroux combined for 17 of those points with James hitting each of his four three-point attempts. BSC refused to give up and scored seven in a row. The Panthers cut Rhodes' lead to six with 52 seconds left. Forced to foul the Lynx, and trailing by five, BSC missed a three-point attempt with 32 seconds left and a big Koki Wiley defensive rebound added another two points after Wiley sank his free throws. Wiley found himself in the same scenario on BSC's next possession after picking up the defensive board once again, but missed his first free throw to give Rhodes an eight-point lead with 15 seconds left. The Panthers ultimately finished the game with a trey with two seconds left.

Giroux finished the game with 22 points and six rebounds while James went 4-of-5 from three-point range with 17 points and five assists. Mitch Weatherford also recorded five assists to go along with his nine points and five rebounds.

Rhodes will travel to Sewanee on Friday, followed by Centre on Sunday.
