Atlanta, Ga. - It was a muggy afternoon on the campus of No. 25-ranked Emory University for women's soccer on Sunday. The Lynx shut out the Eagles for 67 minutes until Emory scored twice in just over a minute of action. The Lynx eventually cut their lead to one before falling to 7-3 on the season. Emory is now 6-2. They beat Sewanee 2-1 and fell to No. 14 Centre yesterday 1-0.
"I'm incredibly proud of our defense and goalkeeping efforts today," commented head coach
Katie Chambers. "Emory is an elite team and we'll use this additional learning experience as we head into the bulk of our conference schedule."
In the first half Emory rattled off 12 shots with Lynx goalkeeper
Abby Roevens making eight saves to keep the game tied 0-0 at halftime. Three minutes into the second half, Roevens made a diving save to her left to keep Emory off the scoreboard on a hard shot from the top of the box. In the 53rd minute, Roevens again made a fantastic save to keep the shutout in-tact.Â
Â
The Lynx offense had an opportunity in the 59th minute.
Christine McCullough threw in the ball on the fans' sideline when it was redirected back to the freshman who launched the ball at the net, barely inching over the crossbar. Emory then brought the ball down the opposite end of the field where Roevens again made a stop before erasing an Emory corner threat at the goal line.

The Lynx defense in
Carly Cone and
Cati Cabra were kept busy in the 63rd minute, erasing Emory threats in the right corner of the box. Three minutes later Emory served the ball in over the Lynx defense and the one-timer hit the right post for the Eagles' closest shot of the game. A minute later the Eagles converted a goal on a shot just inside the top center of the box towards the left post. Emory scored their second goal a minute after that on a header off a corner which went in just under the middle of the crossbar out of Roevens' reach.
Â
Rhodes avoided the shutout when
Sarah DiLuzio ran down the ball after a long service from
Anya Ranaraja in the 77th minute. DiLuzio, who beat her defender to the box, tapped the ball around the sliding goalkeeper as it crossed the top of the box before laying it into the open net to cut Emory's lead to one.
Â
The Eagles threatened three times on a corner with about five minutes left but Roevens and the defense negated any additional Emory goals.Â
Overall, Emory outshot Rhodes 31-6 while Roevens recorded a career-high 14 saves for the Lynx.
Rhodes heads back to conference action this weekend traveling to Birmingham-Southern Friday and Sewanee Sunday.
