Memphis - Rhodes College volleyball suffered a 3-1 loss to Sewanee in a thrilling matchup inside Mallory Gymnasium.
Sewanee held a 10-point lead in the first set until the Lynx cut that lead to five before running out of time. Senior
Heather Antrim connected on four of her eight attack attempts during the set while
Kelsey Glasper tallied seven digs.
The next three sets, the winner would only win by two points. Rhodes took an 8-5 lead but four straight points put the Tigers on top. The two teams were tied at 9, 11, 12, and 13 before the Lynx went on a 6-2 run to lead 19-15. Rhodes then led 23-19 when the Tigers scored four unanswered points to tie the game. Rhodes evened the match with a kill from senior
Emily Korba and a solo block from Antrim.
In the third set, Rhodes trailed 9-8 before securing five straight points to lead 13-9. Sewanee later went on a 7-2 run to go up 17-16, but the Lynx answered with a 4-1 run to go up by two (20-18). Six straight Tiger points made it 24-20, but the Lynx never gave up and scored four straight to tie the game once more. Sewanee put the set away on a kill and service ace.
Another back-and-fourth set saw the Tigers take a six-point lead (14-8) before Rhodes scored five to their one to pull within two (15-13). Two Lynx kills from
Kathryn Chambers and Glasper cut Sewanee's lead to one (21-20) as each team alternated points to finish the game. Sewanee won the final set 25-23.
Korba recorded five kills in the second and third sets and finished with the team-high 13 kills on the day. At the net,
Annie Entz and
Gabrielle White teamed up for three blocks in the fourth set. White finished with five block assists and one solo block while Entz tallied four block assists. Antrim recorded three solo blocks out of the middle. Defensively, Glasper led the game with 21 digs with libero
Marissa Hall totaling 19.
Sarah Nieland led the Lynx with 22 assists.
Rhodes is on the road next weekend, traveling to Birmingham-Southern on Saturday before going to Jackson, Miss. to take on Millsaps on Sunday.
