Sewanee, Tenn. - Opening the 2019 campaign in a neutral-site matchup against DePauw, Rhodes field hockey came away with a victorious shutout, earning first year head coach
Alexis Kavanaugh her first career win.
This year field hockey plays four quarters of 15 minutes with the clock stopping on corners instead of two 35-minute halves. The Lynx defeated the Tigers 5-0, out-shooting their opponents 22-7.
Rhodes was lethal from the start, scoring two goals on 11 shots in the first quarter alone before adding one in the second and wrapping up the game with two more in the fourth quarter.
Freshman
Sabrina Simpson brought the ball into the circle and scored the game-winner in the fifth minute on a reverse sweep to the near post. The Lynx then earned a corner in the final minute of the first quarter. After DePauw saved the first shot attempt, sophomore
Elizabeth Vernon secured the rebound to score her first collegiate goal/point.
Simpson took a shot in the second quarter, but sophomore
Hannah Luckes gathered the rebound and reverse swept the ball up into the back of the net to put the Lynx ahead by three. After a scoreless third quarter, freshman
Sam Hutchinson earned her first collegiate goal in the 48th minute. After the DePauw goalkeeper made two saves, Hutchinson once again gathered the rebound and this time shot the ball up which deflected off the goalkeeper and into the left corner. With three and a half minutes remaining in the game, Luckes drove the ball down the sideline along the Rhodes bench before bypassing two DePauw defenders. After entering the circle on the left side of the goal, she shot the ball past the sliding goalkeeper into the far right corner to end the day's scoring.
Senior goalkeeper
Nina Migneco made two saves in the second quarter and one in the third. The Lynx defense held DePauw to just one shot in the first and third periods, three in the second and two in the fourth.
Rhodes will have almost two weeks without competition before traveling to Indiana and Ohio taking on Earlham on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Wittenberg on Sunday.
