Memphis - It was a hot afternoon for Rhodes women's soccer in their season opener at home against University of the Ozarks (3-0). The Lynx defense held strong, allowing zero shots while goalkeeper Abbey Roevens made a fantastic punch on an Eagle corner late in the game to earn the shutout.
A handball inside the box set up Rhodes for a penalty kick early in the game, but Ozarks goalkeeper Kiara Henry saved the shot to keep the game scoreless until the 18th minute. The Lynx transitioned the ball up the middle of the field with freshman
Anya Ranaraja passing the ball from midfield to sophomore
Alli Cundiff who netted the game winner, slipping the ball right past Henry on the ground.
After a 1-0 halftime score, the Lynx again found themselves in a fast transition.
Maddy Peticolas passed to
Liz Vega in the middle of the field who one-touched the ball up to Cundiff inside the box. Cundiff's goal in the 53rd minute put the Lynx up 2-0.
Sophomore defender
Olivia House dribbled the ball all the way up the West sideline from the defensive third before serving the ball to the box for freshman
Annika Johnson to shoot over the Eagle goalkeeper for her first career goal. On the day, Rhodes out-shot Ozarks 22-0 while Henry made 12 saves for the Eagles.
Rhodes returns to their home pitch to face Fontbonne University on Sunday at noon.
