Memphis - With an original start time of noon, Rhodes College baseball and Centre College took the field at 2:30 p.m. after storms passed through Memphis overnight and until 1 p.m. The weather broke just long enough for a two and a half hour conference baseball matchup, with drizzle every now and then. After Centre downed the Lynx 4-1 to win the series, a light rain began to fall once again.
After three scoreless innings,
Paul Giacomazzi reached base on a Colonel error to lead off the fourth inning. After reaching second base, he scored the first run of the game on a hard line drive towards right field by
Wood Kimbrough. Centre answered with three unearned runs in the sixth inning. Kimbrough made a nice defensive play at third base but the Colonel still reached on a misplay at first. A double tied the game before a single drove in two more runs.
In the eighth, with runners on second and third with two outs, Centre intentionally walked
Jacob Telli to load the bases. Kimbrough once again got a good piece on the ball, but the Colonels made a diving catch in right center eliminating multiple Lynx runs to end the inning. Centre's right fielder then hit a home run to right center for the final run to lead off the top of the ninth.
Nick Bosma suffered the loss. He struck out five in 5.2 innings and walked one.
Alex Garrett entered the game in the sixth with a runner on first. He threw back to first on a pickoff attempt and after the Colonel base runner took off for second, the Lynx made the play 1-3-6 to head into the bottom half of the inning. Garrett sat each batter down that he faced, except for the leadoff home run.
Brady John doubled for Rhodes while
Ryan Palermo went 3-for-4.
Rhodes will now host non-conference foe Belhaven on Wednesday, April 10 at 3 p.m.
