Memphis - Rhodes College baseball went up 7-3 against the Belhaven University at Stauffer Field before the Blazers pulled within one after scoring three runs in the sixth inning. In the eighth, Belhaven scored two runs to take their second lead of the game on two hits and two walks. Rhodes answered with a
Paul Giacomazzi two-run home run to right before Belhaven regained the lead on a two-run shot to left.
Rhodes trailed 10-9 headed into the bottom of the ninth when
Will Heurtin broke a hitless streak to lead off with a single up the middle. He got into scoring position on a passed ball and went to third when
Ben Wilson made a sharp hit up the middle and was called safe at first base. Heurtin was thrown out at home on a
Zach Liebenson bunt down the first base line. Wilson then scored the tying run when
Brady John hit to roughly the same spot as Wilson and the fielder's choice to second base was high, scoring the 10th run of the game with one out.
Jacob Telli walked to load the bases for
Peter York who came in clutch again for the Lynx. The freshman drove in the winning run on a hit to right field.
Carter King picked up the win for Rhodes who had six pitchers throw in the game. King closed out the final two innings as Rhodes improves to 19-15 this season.
Rhodes hit three home runs in the game.
Ryan Palermo solo homered to score the first run for the Lynx before
Wood Kimbrough's three-run homer in the third gave Rhodes a 5-3 lead before Giacomazzi's homer in the eighth.
There were six lead changes in the game and a total of 25 hits, 13 from Belhaven and 12 from Rhodes. Kimbrough, Telli, Giacomazzi and Palermo all recorded two hits while Telli and York both walked twice.
Rhodes is at home this weekend in a big rivalry matchup against Berry College. The series has shifted to a doubleheader Friday at noon, followed by a single game on Saturday.
