Memphis - Rhodes College men's lacrosse took to Mason Field on the other side of the athletic complex Saturday to host Southwestern University. Rhodes, who was down 12-8, scored the final four goals of regulation in five and a half minutes to tie the game. Two of those came from freshman
Ryan Dancy, another from junior
Addison Mueller and finally the game-tying goal from freshman
Christian Cisneros. Dancy then scored the overtime game-winner, sending the Lynx to 11-3 on the season.
Tied 3-3 after the first quarter, Southwestern led 7-5 at halftime after opening the second quarter with three straight goals. During the first half the Lynx held a 26-20 shot advantage.
After scoring the first goal of the game, Rhodes'
Matt Perez scored the first goal of the second half until the Pirates went on a 3-1 run to lead 10-7. Perez then assisted
Cale Dow to open the final quarter, but again Southwestern responded with two straight goals to lead by four. From there, the Lynx capitalized on Southwestern turnovers. Mueller assisted Dancy on Rhodes' ninth goal of the game in the first of two straight goals for the New Jersey native. With Southwestern leading 12-10, Rhodes sought to pull within one on a man-up situation, however a bad pass gave possession back to the Pirates. Southwestern crossed midfield and under pressure from the Lynx committed an illegal procedure, handing possession to the Lynx who scored when Perez served up Mueller with 1:18 to go.
Rhodes won the next face-off, but their shot was voided on a save by Kyle Kuberski. The Lynx held possession on two ground balls before another shot went high with 12 seconds left. That's when Cisneros took the ball off the endline and after a screen from
David Perez, rolled the crease to tie the game with seven seconds left.
In overtime, Southwestern won the face-off and after entering the box, called a timeout with 34 seconds left on the possession clock. After the timeout, Southwestern immediately turned the ball over, giving the Lynx new life. Dancy entered the playing field from the substitution box, received a long pass from the opposite side of the field, dodged a defender and fired from the top of the box to the top right corner to secure the overtime victory.
In the game, Rhodes made 19 of 22 clear attempts, won 17 of 27 face-offs, held a 45-33 ground ball advantage, and out-shot the Pirates 58-33. In goal,
Brendan Roberts earned his third win of the season on 12 saves.
It was a career-high day for Dancy with his hat trick on four shots while
Addison Mueller also scored three goals and tallied two assists.
Rhodes is back at home next weekend to close out the regular season on Crain Field. Senior night will be on Friday against Centre at 7 p.m. (April 12), followed by a matchup against Sewanee on Sunday.
