Freshmen guide Lynx in Victory over Stevens

Memphis - Rhodes College women's lacrosse defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 22-16 Monday afternoon. The Lynx, who have now won four straight, improve to 6-3 on the year. Stevens drops to 2-4.

The majority of the first half was a tale of runs as Rhodes began with a 4-0 lead before Stevens came back to tie the game 5-5 with almost 13 minutes left in the half. Six straight goals for the hosts gave Rhodes an 11-5 lead before the Lynx led 12-8 at halftime.

During the second half, defense shined more as the Lynx forced multiple Stevens turnovers on hurried shots and bad passes as the shot clock was winding down. The Ducks took advantage of a Lynx green to score a man-up goal with 7:38 to play. The Lynx then scored the next four goals to end the game, including a man-up after the Ducks received a yellow card for a check to the head.

In the game, goalie Lauren Lazure made nine saves. Freshmen Baylee Barker and Aidan Pike combined for 15 goals for the Lynx while Barker (12) and fellow freshman Izzy Parker (eight) combined for 20 draw controls. Both Barker and Pike tallied eight points as Barker scored eight goals and Pike tallied seven goals and an assist. Pike netted the game-winner with 18:44 to go on a free position shot. Sophomore Hannah Swinerton recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers while fellow sophomore KK Mulholland also recorded three ground balls.

Rhodes held a two-shot advantage over Stevens and led in ground balls (21-18) and draw controls (25-15). Rhodes made 11-of-15 clears while Stevens went 15-of-20.

Rhodes will return to conference action, traveling to Sewanee on Saturday. The Lynx return home for two games next week, hosting Wellesley at 4 p.m. on Tuedsay, March 26, followed by a big conference matchup against Centre on Saturday, March 30 at noon.
