Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the Sewanee Tigers Sunday. In their final home game of the season, the Lynx defeated the Tigers 72-60 to snap a four-game losing streak. The win takes Rhodes to 12-11 on the season while Sewanee falls to 9-13.
The Lynx held Sewanee scoreless through the first five minutes of play before they secured a 21-9 advantage after the first 10 minutes. An eight-point run in the second period was negated by the Tigers responded with nine unanswered points. Rhodes led 53-33 headed into the final period where they secured a 23-point lead, their largest of the game with 7:16 to go. Sewanee didn't back down and chipped away at the Lynx, concluding the game on a 9-4 run.
Three Lynx scored in double digits, led by
Alyssa Owens (14),
Caroline Taylor (12) and
Kiera Downey (10), while senior
Allie Young tallied 11 rebounds and nine points, narrowly missing another double-double. Owens, Downey and
Lindsey Whiteside all recorded four assists.
The Lynx averaged 44.8% overall and 35.7% from long range as they sank 10-of-28 attempts behind the arc. Sewanee struggled from the distance, netting four of 19 attempts, however the Tigers missed only two of their 20 free throw attempts.
Rhodes will travel to Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps next weekend before concluding the regular season at Hendrix on February 16.
