Memphis - Rhodes College men's basketball took an early 15-6 lead over Sewanee Sunday, but the Tigers took the lead at the half and held on to hand Rhodes an overtime loss in their final home contest.
The Lynx led 26-21 until Sewanee claimed a 28-27 halftime advantage after a three-pointer with 45 seconds left in the first half. Tied 29-29, the Lynx scored six straight points to lead 35-39. Rhodes maintained the upper hand, leading 40-37 until the Tigers went on a 13-2 run to lead 50-42 with 6:28 to go.
Down 52-45, the Lynx scored nine straight points to get the crowd roaring with a 54-52 lead. Sewanee led by two with 41 seconds left after a layup and made free throw after a foul, but
Bryce Berry tied the game for Rhodes on two free throws with 25 seconds left. With time running down and the Tigers with possession, Rhodes freshman
Brenden McNamara drew a charge against Sewanee with 1.7 seconds left. The turnover gave the Lynx a chance to tie the game as
Daniel Darst launched the ball down court to McNamara who tipped the ball to Weatherford behind the arc. Fans held their breath as Weatherford's turn-around three-point shot almost fell into the basket as time expired.
Sewanee gained possession on the tipoff but Berry stole the ball which Darst converted into a three-point lead for the Lynx. The Tigers managed to score five points in a row after they blocked three Lynx shots. Tied 59-59, a defensive rebound by Sewanee, followed by an offensive rebound, was converted into the winning bucket with two minutes left in the game.
Darst led the game with a career-high 18 rebounds in the final game inside Mallory Gymnasium of his career. He narrowly missed a double-double after scoring nine points. McNamara led the Lynx with 13 points while
Jake Nestlehutt also tallied nine points. Darst and Berry both recorded three assists while Berry also tallied four steals.
The Lynx are on the road for the rest of the season, first travelling to Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps this weekend.
