Memphis - Rhodes College baseball split games with Wabash College Monday, falling 7-3 in nine, before winning 4-2 in seven. The Lynx are now 4-5 on the season after going 2-1 against the Little Giants this weekend.
Rhodes held a 2-0 lead in game one before Wabash scored four runs in the sixth on four singles, a walk, a balk and a sacrifice fly. The Little Giants then plated two more runs in the seventh on three walks, a flyout, single and hit-by-pitch until the Lynx rolled a double-play to get out of the inning. Rhodes plated their final run in the bottom half of the inning when
Jacob Telli singled up the middle to bring in
Paul Giacomazzi. Telli finished the game two-of-four at the plate with a walk and two RBI.
Alex Garrett suffered the loss after
John Ganucheau left with a 2-1 lead after five innings.
In the second game, Wabash plated the first run in the second after a Lynx throwing error extended the inning. In the bottom half of the inning with two outs, freshman
Josh Esclamado walked to load the bases for Giacomazzi. A single for Giacomazzi score two Lynx until Wabash tied the game in the fourth on three walks and a sacrifice fly. The Lynx loaded the bases in the sixth after freshman catcher
Chris Penna was hit by a pitch.
Jake Stacy then hit a slow chopper to the pitcher for a fielder's choice to home, but
Will Heurtin beat out the throw as he collided with the catcher for the winning run. In the next at-bat,
Zach Liebenson laid a bunt down the first base line as everyone moved up safe for the final run.
Carter King picked up the win, allowing one hit in three innings.
Nick Bosma got the start and allowed just one hit across four innings.
Rhodes opens conference play this weekend in Atlanta, Ga. at Oglethorpe with a doubleheader Saturday and single game Sunday. The Lynx then travel to Huntingdon on Wednesday, March 6 before returning to Memphis to host the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh March 9-10.
