Birmingham, Ala. - Both of the Rhodes men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the fourth day of the 2019 Southern Athletic Association Championships Saturday night. The Lynx placed second on both sides behind Birmingham-Southern with the women earning 833 points and the men 646 points. Senior
Allie Hill was named the SAA Co-Female Swimmer of the Year and sophomore
Hayden Hill was named the SAA Co-Male Swimmer of the Year as were Becca Erwin and Nico Medina, both of BSC.
Hayden won the 200 free and 200 fly where he set a new SAA and meet record. He was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay, and placed second in the 200 IM. Allie won the 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM in a B-Cut, setting a new meet record. She also swam a B-Cut to lead off the 400 medley relay (100 back - 56.56) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.
On Saturday, in the 1650 free,
Carly Good and
Elyse Jacobs raced each other to record-breaking swims. Both swam faster than the current record, which was set back in 2006 by Kim Green. Good placed second in the race and now owns the new record of 17:36.78 in her final career swim, but Jacobs, who placed third (17:43.82), also swam faster than Green's time of 17:47.18. On the men's side,
Jon Pulaski placed fifth and
Roland Chang sixth.
In the very next event,
Allie Hill swam to a champion time of 2:03.94 in the 200 back.
Lilli Metts and
Erin Osborne placed fourth and fifth respectively while
Brittany Pierce won the consolation heat, and swam faster than the final two times in the champion's race. Turning to the men's side, the Lynx broke another record as
Zac Gammons placed third in 1:54.79, edging
Simon Boles record from last year by 0.30 seconds.
Madi Griffin placed third after her 52.19 second 100 free swim which breaks her own record from last year by 0.02 seconds. For the men,
Evan Ziolkowski and
Harrison Rozman tied for fourth in 46.91 seconds.
Christian Stankovic placed third in the 200 back while
Julia Cronk and
Grace Tolan went head-to-head in the 200 fly placing third and fourth respectively with a 0.10 second difference.
Hayden Hill's 1:48.78 200 fly is a new SAA record as well as a new meet record. His finish was 0.20 seconds behind his record-breaking mark at Transy earlier this year.
The women's 400 free relay team were less than two seconds out of third place to end the championship. The men's foursome of Rozman, Ziolkowski, Gammons and Hill broke last year's record by four seconds to earn their third relay win of the championship!
