Freshmen Guide Offense in Women's Lacrosse Season Opener

Louisville, Ky. - Rhodes College women's lacrosse opened their 2019 campaign with a neutral-site matchup against Mount Union on the campus of the University of Louisville on a snowing Friday evening.

The Lynx scored first and took a 3-1 advantage before the Raiders scored five straight goals to end the half. Rhodes scored first to begin the second half but another three goals from Mount Union opened the game until Rhodes answered with three of their own, including back-to-back goals from junior Aubrey Gray. Freshman Baylee Barker netted a goal with 10:05 remaining to pull Rhodes within one. The Raiders scored the final goal of the game with just over six minutes to play.

Freshman Payton Bennett scored the first goal of the game as four Lynx freshmen tallied their first career collegiate goals. In addition to Bennett and Barker, Izzy Parker and Sarah Delahunt scored. Gray led the Lynx with two goals and an assist while Barker also tallied two goals. Senior Annika Hedlund and freshman Aidan Pike both recorded an assist as well.

Mount Union held a slight 10-8 advantage in draw controls as well as a 34-23 shot advantage.

Rhodes junior goalkeeper Lauren Lazure begins the season with a career-high 17 saves, tying the program record for saves in a game. Sarah Daniels also saved 17 shots against Centre in 2015.

The Lynx will remain in Louisville to take on Illinois Wesleyan at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday.
