Jackson, Miss. - Down by one point at halftime for the third game in a row, Rhodes College men's basketball was determined to end a seven-game losing streak at Millsaps College. The Lynx posted a 50-41 second half advantage to defeat the Majors 92-84.
There were 11 lead changes during the game as well as seven ties. The Lynx recorded 25 points from fast breaks and shot 55.4% overall. They were accurate shooting from long range, making six of 11 attempts while Millsaps struggled behind the arc, making six of 31 attempts for 19.4% accuracy.
Trailing 43-35 with 2:13 to play in the first half, Rhodes went into halftime on a 7-0 run which included four free throws and a fast break three-pointer from
Mitch Weatherford as time expired. Millsaps maintained their advantage until Weatherford drained another trey to give the Lynx a brief 63-62 lead with 8:49 to play.
Jake Nestlehutt then tied the game 66-66 on a three-pointer of his own with 7:38 to go. From there, the Lynx went on a 13-4 run to lead by nine, their largest of the game with 4:44 left. Millsaps pulled within four with 24 seconds left but the Lynx secured the win on a 6-2 run to end the game.
Weatherford recorded a career-high 25 points in the win after making 9-of-17 field goal attempts and bringing down five rebounds. In total, five Lynx recorded double-digits including Nestlehutt (13) and
Bryce Berry,
Daniel Darst and
Kevin Shen who all recorded 10 points. Three other Lynx also tallied five rebounds in Darst,
Preston Giroux and
Vaughn Samson.
Rhodes will conclude regular season play at Hendrix on Saturday, February 16 at 5 p.m.
