Memphis - In front of the biggest crowd of the year, Rhodes College women's basketball dropped a heartbreaking senior night game to Centre College. Centre overtook the Lynx, who led 39-25 in the third period, with 10 unanswered points in the second half of the fourth period. The loss drops the Lynx to 11-10 on the season and 4-6 in conference. Centre is also now 11-10 overall and 4-6 in SAA play.
Rhodes would like to commend Centre College and head coach Wendy Austin-Robinson on outstanding sportsmanship on the special night. Unable to play due to injury, senior
Danielle Summers was allowed to participate in her senior day contest when the Colonels let Rhodes win the tipoff. The Lynx slowly fed the ball down the court in grand fashion to Summers to wait out the shot clock and sub out of the game.
It was a slow start overall with both teams missing field goals until finally Centre connected on a three-pointer four minutes into the game. Their lead was short-lived as Rhodes took over with 3:34 to play in the first period, holding as much as a 14-point lead in the game, before Centre's 10-point run in the fourth handed Rhodes their fourth straight loss.
Senior
Allie Young led Rhodes with a double-double, tallying 16 points (7-of-11) and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior
Moriah Muhammad tallied four blocks and six rebounds while freshman Keira Downey also secured double-digit points, going four-of-six to total 10 points.
At halftime of the men's game, Rhodes honored Muhammad, Summers and Young as well as senior manager Avery Toliver.
Rhodes will look ahead to their final home game of the season when they host Sewanee on Sunday, February 3 at 1 p.m.
