Memphis – Rhodes College women's basketball held on for a thrilling 73-70 road win over neighboring NCAA Division II Christian Brothers University. The win marks the third in four games for the Lynx who are 4-4 overall. CBU drops to 2-3 on the season.
In a midtown battle of first year head coaches, Rhodes' three-point shooting elevated them to victory as the Lynx shot .500 from beyond the arc, netting 11 treys.
Rhodes held a six-point halftime advantage and maintained the lead until the middle of the fourth quarter when a three-pointer from CBU tied the game 58-58.
A long three pointer from
Libby Long, gave Rhodes a 61-58 advantage. The Bucs pulled within one on their next possession. Another three-pointer from Rhodes (
Ellen Hagen) and a field goal from
Kiera Downey put the Lynx ahead by six until the Bucs tied the game with six straight points with 1:38 remaining.
Hagen made a free throw but a CBU layup gave the Bucs the lead with a minute remaining, their first lead since the first quarter. Owens' turnaround jumper inside the paint with three seconds left on the shot clock gave Rhodes the edge with 34.5 seconds left. CBU advanced the ball on a timeout but Rhodes' defensive pressure allowed
Alli Mayeux to grab the defensive board with 14.9 seconds left. Owens, who recorded the overtime game-winning free throw against Belhaven, went to the line and sank both attempts to give the Lynx a three-point lead with 14.2 seconds left. CBU missed a trey from the top of the key, grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled on their shot attempt with 1.2 seconds remaining. The Bucs made both free throws, making the second attempt on accident as the hosts wanted to ultimately grab the offensive board and lay in the put-back. CBU was forced to foul Downey with 0.4 seconds left and the sophomore drained both free throws to maintain the lead.
Owens recorded 18 of her game-leading 22 points in the first half. She also tallied four assists, three rebounds and three steals while she shot 4-of-7 from three-point range. The Lynx were led defensively by
Maya Longacre's 14 rebounds and three blocks. Downey finished the game with 18 points, scoring 14 of those in the second half while Hagen also finished in double-digits with 12 points going 3-of-5 from long range.
Rhodes will rest during finals week, only returning to action on Sunday, December 15 when they re-match No. 7 – Mary Hardin-Baylor, this time inside Mallory Gymnasium.
