Lexington, Ky. - Rhodes College field hockey scored three goals in the first half on their way to a 4-0 shutout over Concordia University of Wisconsin Saturday morning. The Southern Athletic Association semifinal win sends the Lynx to their eighth straight SAA Championship game.
A 6-1 first quarter shot advantage proved well for the Lynx who scored twice in just over two minutes of play. Freshman
Sam Hutchinson sent the ball to the middle of the circle past two Falcon defenders where fellow freshman
Courtney Kelly roped up the ball and shot it straight to the back of the boards to score her first collegiate goal. The game-winner was soon followed up with another from defender
Meghan Harmon who swiped a deflection mid-air into the far left corner. The shot attempt came on Rhodes' fourth penalty corner of the quarter.
Hannah Luckes secured her eighth goal of the season when she pushed the ball from near the top of the circle past the Falcon goalkeeper to end scoring for the first half. The Lynx defense limited CUW to two shots during the first 30 minutes while the Lynx scored their three goals on seven shots.
After a scoreless third frame, senior goalkeeper
Nina Migneco made a big save to help keep the shutout before senior
Lydia Slyter created space in the offensive zone. After her shot was blocked by a defender, fellow senior
Hailey Mules came flying in and secured the rebound to score her 15th goal of the season in the 56th minute.
Overall, Migneco was made four saves in the game while the offense helped the Lynx earn eight corners to CUW's four.
The Lynx will face No. 14-ranked Centre College at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Lexington for the SAA Championship. Rhodes and Centre are the only SAA teams to ever advance to the field hockey championship, with last year's game going to penalty shots and the 2015 game going into overtime. The Lynx won both of those games and hold a 5-2 championship series record over the Colonels. Fans can find ticket, parking and live streaming links on the
