Women's Soccer Shuts Out Sewanee to Advance to SAA Championship

Danville, Ky. - It was a cold 30 degrees Friday night as the No. 2-seeded Rhodes women's soccer team shut out No. 3-seeded Sewanee 3-0 in the Southern Athletic Association semifinals.

Hosted by Centre College, Sewanee possessed the ball on Rhodes' defensive end early before Abby Roevens cleared the ball to midfield and it was chased down by Alli Cundiff. Cundiff, who sped past a Tiger defender, was intentionally held back as she tried to go one-on-one with the goalie in the 15th minute. Cundiff evaded the defender, but as she shot the ball into the goal, play was stopped while the referee handed the Tiger defender a yellow card.

Later, junior Liz Vega weaved the ball past two defenders and was about to beat a third as she stepped into the box before she was tripped up to earn a penalty kick. Vega's shot to the lower right corner would be the game-winner but she wasn't finished scoring. Two minutes later Rhodes earned a corner kick. Senior Katelyn Curtis' kick was punched out by the Sewanee goalkeeper. Vega gathered the ball at the top of the box and lofted it into the left side of the cage to give Rhodes a two-goal advantage in the 32nd minute.

In the 53rd minute, Cundiff again ran the ball down, then time dribbled the ball around and through two defenders, but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar. Freshman teammate Sarah DiLuzio came in and put the rebound right past the diving goalkeeper for the final goal of the game.

The Lynx held a 10-0 shot advantage in the first half and allowed only four Tiger shots in the second on their way to a 21-4 game advantage. Rhodes also held a 9-2 corner kick advantage.

Rhodes will face No. 10-ranked Centre on Sunday for the tournament title and automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship. First kick is at 1 p.m. ET at Amend Field.
