Women's Basketball Picks Up First Home Victory in OT Thriller

Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball handed Belhaven University their first loss of the season as the Lynx defeated the Blazers 93-92 in overtime. Rhodes moves to .500 on the season (3-3) while Belhaven is now 5-1.

The Lynx trailed by as many as 12 points in the second quarter leading Belhaven to a 39-31 halftime advantage. The Blazers maintained the eight-point lead headed into the fourth quarter but a 6-2 run for the Lynx which included five straight points on an Alli Mayeux three-pointer and Kiera Downey jumper a foot inside the arc, pulled Rhodes within three with 3:41 left in regulation. A fast break trey from Mayeux pulled Rhodes within one, but after a Belhaven layup, freshman Libby Long secured the game-tying three-pointer in the corner with 45.2 seconds left. Belhaven secured another layup with 11 seconds left but after the Lynx advanced the ball on a timeout, Mayeux came up with the game-tying layup driving all the way to the basket from the top of the key. Belhaven missed their driving layup with three seconds left which sent the game into overtime.

Rhodes jumped out to an 86-81 lead after another Long three-pointer and a Downey fast break layup after a Lynx steal. An Owens layup made it 90-84, but Mariah Collins refused to go away for the Blazers and continued to threaten Rhodes' victory. Belhaven lost one of their leading players, Peyton Papenburg, who fouled out with 1:27 left in overtime. Rhodes led by two but an offensive rebound and put-back for the Blazers tied the game with 21 seconds left. Owens drew a foul with 4.6 seconds left and made her first free throw for the game-winning point. Belhaven had possession with 4.3 seconds left and missed the would-be game-winning layup. Belhaven grabbed the offensive board but the clock ran out before the shot got off, sending the Blazers home with their first loss of the season.

Collins led the game with 27 points, scoring 13 of Belhaven's 15 overtime points.

Three Lynx posted 20+ points, led by Downey's 26 on 11 made field goals. Mayeux recoded the only double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds, Owens finished the game with 23 points, five assists, four steals and three blocks, Long tallied 10 points and Caroline Taylor totaled 10 rebounds and five assists.

The victory marks the first home win for the Lynx and their first overtime win of the season.

Rhodes will travel to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
