St. Louis, Mo. – A 77-71 victory at Fontbonne University snapped a three-game losing streak for Rhodes women's basketball as the Lynx improve to 2-3 on the season.
After a tied game at 4-4, Fontbonne went on a 10-4 run to take the lead after the first quarter. The Griffins then led 24-15 with five minutes left in the first half before the Lynx posted a 12-3 run to tie the game 27-27 which included back-to-back three-pointers from freshman
Libby Long. Fontbonne led 29-28 at halftime after shooting over 40% in the field and behind the arc.
An 11-4 Rhodes run in the third quarter put the Lynx ahead by five points until Fontbonne pulled within two by the start of the final quarter. Back-to-back three-pointers gave the Griffins a 51-49 lead. The Lynx led by just one point until they scored eight unanswered points to take a 68-59 advantage with 3:44 remaining. A 6-1 Fontbonne run cut Rhodes' lead to four with two minutes left, but an
Alyssa Owens three-pointer and free throw gave the Lynx an eight-point spread with 16 seconds left.
Overall,
Kiera Downey led the game with 25 points and three steals shooting 11-of-16 while Owens tallied a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Also recording double-digits for the Lynx was
Alli Mayeux with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Rhodes averaged .460 in the field and helped force 17 Fontbonne turnovers.
The Lynx are back inside Mallory Gymnasium on Tuesday, hosting Belhaven at 6 p.m.
