No. 24 Bears Edge Lynx in Overtime

St. Louis, Mo. – Rhodes College women's basketball battled to an 86-80 overtime loss to No. 24-ranked Washington University in St. Louis.
 
It was the Bears' home opener on Edwards-Fahey Court, when Rhodes won the tip-off which resulted in an Alli Mayeux three-pointer to open the game. The Bears tied the game after a scoreless minute and a half before back-to-back buckets put the Lynx ahead 8-5. WashU rallied to take a seven-point lead but back-to-back treys from the Lynx made it a one-point game.
 
Alyssa Owens tied the game on a second-quarter opening three-pointer but WashU connected on four unanswered points to take a six-point lead. The Lynx clawed back to tie the game 34-34 and ended the first half with six unanswered points to lead 44-41 at halftime.
 
The Lynx maintained their lead throughout the second half, gaining a 70-61 lead with 3:28 left in the game. The Bears inched their way back with eight straight points during three minutes while the Lynx missed five shots and committed two turnovers.
 
With 25 seconds left, Rhodes led by one and scored their final basket on a Kiera Downey free throw with 14 seconds left. WashU forced overtime after a layup went through the net with 0.8 seconds left. During overtime the Lynx trailed 79-78 with 54 seconds remaining but the Bears held on for the win.
 
In the first half the two teams combined for 14 three-pointers with the Lynx going 9-of-25, led by senior Alyssa Owens' 4-of-8 for a combined 16 points. Owens finished with the game-high 22 points going 5-of-12 from three-point range and brought in nine rebounds. Kiera Downey totaled 20 points while Caroline Taylor recorded 14 points and Alli Mayeux recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points. Maya Longacre tallied three rebounds and seven rebounds for the Lynx.
 
Overall, Rhodes struggled at the free throw line, making 9-of-19 attempts.
 
WashU had six players score double digits with one recording a double-double.
 
The Lynx head will compete down the street from the Bears Saturday at 1 p.m. against Fontbonne University.
