Memphis - Rhodes College women's soccer opened the 2019 Southern Athletic Association tournament with a 4-0 shutout over No. 7-seeded Oglethorpe Saturday afternoon. The win is the fourth in a row for Rhodes and the No. 2-seed in the tournament's third straight shutout.
Senior
Katelyn Curtis scored the game-winner in the 15th minute on a free kick in her final collegiate home game. The midfielder booted the ball into the top left corner from 10 yards outside the box. The Lynx made it 2-0 less than 10 minutes later after
Anya Ranaraja made space and slipped the ball between two defenders up to
Sarah DiLuzio. DiLuzio's first goal of the game came when she fired the shot just inside the box all the way across to the bottom left corner.
Christine McCullough found the ball on a rebound, pivoted the other way and left-footed the ball into the upper left corner, past the Stormy Petrel goalkeeper and over the head of a defender on the goal line, giving the Lynx a three-goal lead by halftime.
The lone goal of the second half came in the 66th minute. Junior
Liz Vega took two defenders with her to goal line before sending the ball right in front of the goal for DiLuzio to kick the ball between a sliding goalkeeper and a defender.
In the game, Rhodes out shot Oglethorpe 29-6 and held a 4-1 corner kick advantage.
Abby Roevens made three saves to earn her ninth shutout of the season.
The win puts the Lynx 12-5 on the year, the single highest number of wins for head coach
Katie Chambers' career. Rhodes will find out Sunday if they play Hendrix or Sewanee in Danville, Ky. on Friday in the SAA semifinals.
