Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball couldn't hold off Dominican University Sunday afternoon in their 2019-20 home opener. The Stars hit a three-point buzzer beater to send the game into overtime before they edged the Lynx 76-75. Dominican remains unbeaten on the season (3-0) as the Lynx fall to 1-2.
Rhodes took an early 25-12 lead after 10 minutes but Dominican held a 15-8 second quarter advantage. Rhodes led 33-27 at halftime. The Lynx got into foul trouble in the third quarter which allowed Dominican to score eight points on free throws to edge Rhodes with a 17-16 advantage. The Lynx held a two-point lead headed into the fourth frame before taking a 55-49 advantage. Dominican went on a 9-2 run to take a one-point lead with 4:16 to play in regulation. The Lynx scored five points in a row before they held a 67-63 advantage. A Dominican three-pointer threatened the Lynx but two
Alyssa Owens free throws built the window again. The Stars forced overtime on a three-point buzzer-beater in the corner.
In overtime, an Owens three-pointer gave the Lynx a 74-71 advantage but Dominican responded with a trey themselves before they recorded the game-winning bucket with a minute left. Trailing by one, a 10-second back court turnover by Dominican gave the Lynx a final possession chance, but a missed three-pointer with seven seconds left landed in the hands of the Stars. After Rhodes was forced to foul and Dominican missed both free throws, the Lynx had 1.8 seconds for a desperation attempt, but couldn't convert.

Alexys Mathangani recorded her first collegiate double-double with 13 rebounds and 12 points. She also added three blocks, one of which came in the final minute of regulation. Other double-digit scorers for the Lynx included
Maya Longacre (14), Owens (13) and
Kiera Downey (12).
Dominican led the game in long range shooting (38.7%) going 12-of-31, which included four from Amari Stafford. Rhodes led in the field overall (37.9%) as both teams connected on 25 field goals. The Lynx also shot 70.4% from the free throw line.
Rhodes is traveling next weekend in St. Louis, Mo., taking on No. 24 WashU on Friday, followed by a Saturday afternoon matchup against Fontbonne University.
