Memphis - A game which began breezy and cloudy, turned sunny and hot really fast as Rhodes field hockey defeated Sewanee for the second day in a row (5-1).
The non-conference matchup started off with a Tiger fast break and goal in the second minute, but the Lynx countered in the 12th minute when senior
Hailey Mules broke the Rhodes and SAA career goal records. The Lynx made two shot attempts, both saved by the Sewanee keeper before they earned a corner. After their ensuing shot attempt was blocked, senior
Maria Varat came close to scoring but was negated by a Tiger defensive save. Mules was there for the rebound in the scrum to score the record-breaking goal and tie the game.
The Lynx would shut out the Tigers for the remainder of the game with Rhodes' game-winning goal coming in the second quarter. Sophomore
Hannah Luckes netted her second game-winner of the weekend on an assist from Mules. Mules dribbled the ball along the baseline before passing it to the left center of the circle for Luckes to bury.
After halftime, Mules continued to dominate the offense, scoring a hat trick after goals in the 35th, 40th and 49th minutes.
Meghan Harmon 's shot from the top of the circle was saved but Mules wrapped up the rebound before it went out of bounds and slipped it past the left post to break the all-time career points record for both the SAA and Rhodes. Her third goal came after a corner when
Victoria Palazzetti played the ball from the top-right of the circle over to Mules near the left post for the deflection. Finally, Mules, who finished the game with a point on each Lynx goal, scored her fourth goal of the game after Luckes stole the ball from Sewanee near the top of Rhodes' offensive circle and passed it to Mules in the center who fired it on the ground between the keeper's pads.
Mules now has 56 career goals and 136 career points, breaking Christina Difelice's records of 52 goals and 131 points respectively.
Freshman
Riley Marzola got the start for the Lynx and her first career win after making a save.
Meghan Harmon made her second defensive save in as many days for the Lynx who outshot the Tigers 22-3 and held a 9-4 corner advantage.
The Lynx are off next weekend and stay at home October 19-20 to host Concordia-Wisconsin.
