Memphis - Finally getting to play a game on their home field in their eighth game of the season, Rhodes field hockey defeated Sewanee 4-1 Saturday morning. The win ends a four-game losing skid and improves the Lynx to .500 on the year while the Tigers drop to 2-6. The two teams will have a re-match on Mason Field Sunday at 11 a.m.
Rhodes scored on the first shot of the game in the seventh minute. Senior
Lydia Slyter sent the ball down towards the left post to fellow senior
Hailey Mules who netted the game-winner, her sixth goal of the season. The goal ties Mules for the most career goals scored by a Lynx in the history of the program.
Sewanee had a great look at the goal nearing the end of the 25th minute but junior defender
Meghan Harmon was there to shift the ball out of harm's way before it ricocheted off the goal post. Rhodes then went on a fast break with sophomore
Hannah Luckes one of the lone forwards with the ball. The Tigers took possession but Luckes came from behind and stole the ball before burying it in the back of the cage after a one-vs-one with the Sewanee goalkeeper.Â
The Lynx scored early in the third quarter after a penalty corner opportunity. The ball was sent up to Harmon at the top of the circle. She passed inside to
Victoria Palazzetti on the right side where Palazzetti sent the ball towards the cage with Luckes tipping it in to put Rhodes up by three in the 32nd minute. Sewanee avoided the shutout in the 43rd minute after a shot deflected off a Rhodes' defender's stick and slipped into the cage right underneath the crossbar and out of reach of Rhodes goalkeeper
Nina Migneco.Â
The Lynx tallied their final goal when Mules assisted
Sabrina Simpson int he 49th minute. Mules played the ball up field to Simpson who dribbled a couple of times on the left side before shooting it into the right corner of the goal.Â
Overall, Rhodes scored once in each quarter and held a shot advantage of 18-6 and corner advantage of 13-3 over the Tigers.Â
