Memphis - No. 6- ranked Berry College swept Rhodes volleyball 3-0 Friday night, but not without a fight from the Lynx. Berry took the sets 25-16, 26-24 and 25-11. The Vikings are now 14-3 overall and 5-1 while Rhodes drops to 7-10 on the season.
The first set was tied 10-10 before Berry went on a 7-1 run to open the game. Senior
Heather Antrim, who would lead the Lynx in kills during the game, recorded four kills on six attempts in the set and put down a big block in the middle.
There were 10 tied scores in the second set and seven lead changes. Rhodes held a 15-11 advantage but the game was soon tied at 18. Rhodes freshman
Gabrielle White recorded a kill followed by a solo block to put Rhodes up by two. The Lynx again led by two (22-20) after a big kill from
Kathryn Chambers. Berry called a timeout and after the teams tied at 23 points, the Lynx called a timeout to regroup. Berry led 24-23 but
Tyler Feddema's soft attack went right over the Berry middles and hit the ground to tie the game for the final time. The Vikings held on for the win after a kill and Lynx attack error.
Rhodes trailed Berry early (9-1) but that didn't stop the scrappy Lynx trying to make a comeback. The Lynx trailed 13-4 and after scoring two points in a row, it looked like Berry would take a 14-6 lead, but Rhodes had other plans. Libero
Marissa Hall came up with a dig and after
Kelsey Glasper chased it out beyond the scorer's table, senior
Emily Korba volleyed the ball over her head, low over the net to the Viking's strong side where Berry tried to one-time the kill but ended in an attack error. Rhodes' final point of the game came on an Antrim kill in the middle.
Antrim hit .500 to lead the game, going 8-of-16 with four kills at the net. Glasper led the Lynx with 15 digs and
Annie Burke nine assists.
Rhodes will return to Mallory Gymnasium Saturday at noon to face Oglethorpe.
