Danville, Ky. - It came down to the final six minutes in the Southern Athletic Association Game of the Week as Rhodes field hockey traveled to unbeaten and No. 15-ranked Centre College.
Centre scored first after receiving a penalty corner in the 12th minute. After the ball was inserted and came back outside, a laser of a pass was sent into the middle where it found SAA-leading scorer Savannah Elpers, whose hard shot ricocheted off Lynx goalkeeper
Nina Migneco's pad into the far left corner as the senior went for the save. The Colonels then took a 2-0 advantage a little over a minute into the second quarter on another corner opportunity. Rhodes cut that lead to one with 32 seconds left in the second quarter. Rhodes gained possession of the ball near the sideline around the top of the defensive third and sent the ball into the circle where senior
Hailey Mules ran the ball down, and slipped it past the sliding Colonel goalkeeper to avoid a first half shutout.
As the third quarter was winding down the Lynx again scored on a fast break. Sophomore
Jenn Kirby cleared the ball at the top of the circle all the way up to midfield where Mules took control and began dribbling it down the field. After passing one defender, she went past another as she entered the circle before shooting the ball from the left middle of the box, around the goalkeeper and to the far back right corner to tie the game with eight seconds left in the quarter.
Migneco kept the Lynx alive with three saves in the fourth quarter including two on corners in the first minute and a half. Centre earned a yellow card but Rhodes was handed a green card a minute later to eliminate a longer man-up opportunity. Centre was awarded a corner with 5:40 left in the game, which they converted into the game-winner, just 10 seconds after the Lynx were handed a green card. The shot from up top was headed wide before it got past most of the Lynx defense when a Colonel diverted the ball back into the goal. Another Lynx green card in the 57th minute hindered their chances at tying the game once again.
Rhodes totaled three of their six shots in the game in the second quarter while Centre recorded 18 in the game including seven in the fourth quarter. Migneco made nine saves for the Lynx who earned just two penalty corners.
Rhodes is now 7-5 on the year while Centre improves to 15-0.
The Lynx wrap up their regular season Sunday at Transylvania University at 12 p.m. ET.
