Memphis - Rhodes College women's soccer picked up a big 2-0 shutout over Berry College at home Sunday. The Lynx are vying for second place in the regular season standings with the final conference game scheduled for Saturday, October 26. Sunday's win propels the Lynx to 10-5 on the year and 4-2 in conference.
After each team got a shot off in the first four minutes of the game, Rhodes capitalized early when
Anya Ranaraja set up
Alli Cundiff for the game-winner 12 minutes into the game. On the very next shot, just one minute and 11 seconds later,
Sarah DiLuzio assisted
Liz Vega for the final goal.Â
Ranaraja took the ball from Berry near midfield and dribbled it up the center. She footed it ahead along the ground to the top of the box where Cundiff took one step around her defender and kicked the ball on the ground into the back left corner. The goal is her 10th overall and and fourth game-winner on the season.
DiLuzio dribbled the ball across the field before her kick deflected off a Viking and right over to Vega. Vega stutter-stepped, tapped the ball to her left and then booted if from outside the box, bending it up and over the Viking goalkeeper.Â
The Lynx would total nine shots in the first half and 11 in the second to finish with a 20-8 shot advantage. The Lynx defense not only held Berry scoreless but also held the Vikings to zero corner kicks. Berry split halves with their keepers who totaled 11 saves.
Abby Roevens helped Rhodes earn the shutout with three saves. Â
Rhodes will honor their three seniors prior to their 11 a.m. SAA matchup against Hendrix on Saturday to close the regular season.
