Memphis - It was gorgeous and 60 degrees Saturday as Rhodes football hosted Birmingham-Southern College halfway through the season. Ultimately, Birmingham-Southern held the Lynx scoreless until the final minute, winning the conference matchup 46-7.
Rhodes elected to receive the ball and were forced to punt on their first drive. BSC rushed for 76 yards on their first drive before they found the end zone on a four-yard pass. Rhodes was again forced to punt before the Panthers rushed on eight consecutive plays. They then went down the field for a 15-yard pass before reaching the end zone on their third rush attempt. Another BSC touchdown, this time a 25-yard reception, gave BSC a 21-0 lead. BSC intercepted the first play of Rhodes' next drive and then scored two more touchdowns to take a 36-0 lead by halftime.
BSC scored a touchdown and field goal in the third quarter before Rhodes held the Panthers scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Lynx found the back of the end zone on their final drive of the game. Starting with 4:41 to play, Rhodes'
Jace Franklin made five completions on seven attempts as the Lynx picked up 44 reception yards before Franklin took the ball himself for a 14-yard rush to BSC's 11-yard line. Franklin then found
Graham Shank open on fourth and eight for a nine-yard touchdown reception.
Wiley Henshaw's extra point attempt was good to give the Lynx seven points.
BSC held possession for 21:10 of the first half on their way to a total time of 37:28. The Lynx defense, on the field for the majority of the game, were led by
Conner Mitchell who totaled 16 tackles including six solo against the Panthers.
D'On Coofer tackled the Panther quarterback for a loss of eight yards while the Lynx totaled five tackles for loss of 15 yards.
Tony Heyward and
Bryce Hayes both recorded seven tackles while
Chris Brannagan and
Trent Holt tallied six apiece.
Franklin totaled 54 rushing yards including one for 23 yards while CJ Laws made four catches for 52 yards including the longest of the day for Rhodes at 17 yards.
Luke Gerzon recorded a reception for 15 yards while
James Moskosky (13) and
Ethan Chamberlin (12) also made catches over 10 yards.
Rhodes will have a bye week next week before traveling to Berry College October 26 for a 2 p.m. ET conference game.
