Sewanee, Tenn. - Consistent first half shooting (50%) gave Rhodes women's basketball a 31-27 halftime advantage over Sewanee Sunday afternoon. The Lynx overcame Sewanee in the fourth period, taking the 64-57 victory and improving to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in conference. The Tigers are now 6-7 overall and 0-3 in conference.
Rhodes jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Sewanee led 21-16 after the first period. During the second period, the Lynx opened the second period with a 15-1 run to lead 31-22, their largest lead of the game. During that first half, Rhodes held a 21-14 rebounding advantage, 17 of which were defensive. Senior
Allie Young led the game with 10 points and six rebounds after converting four of her five field goal attempts.
After Rhodes opened the second half with a layup, Sewanee went on a 10-0 run, eight of which were scored by Katie Roth including back-to-back three pointers. A defensive rebound from Young turned into a Lynx trey from freshman
Ellen Hagen, bringing Rhodes within one point of the Tigers. Sewanee missed two three-pointers in a row as the Lynx came up with both defensive rebounds to take a 40-37 lead. The Tigers tied the game on a three-pointer to end third period play.
The two teams opened the fourth period trading buckets until tied 44-44. Then the Lynx secured four points in a row before they held a 50-46 lead. Sewanee sank another trey to trail by one with four and a half minutes to play. Sophomore
Lindsey Whiteside made her shot as she was fouled and converted the free throw to give Rhodes a 53-49 advantage before freshman
Kiera Downey's three-pointer put the Lynx ahead by seven. Rhodes would hold out the final three minutes for the victory.
The Lynx finished the game shooting 48.9% in the field. Rhodes did commit 19 turnovers compared to Sewanee's 12, however the Lynx secured 36 defensive rebounds on their way to edging the Tigers 41-38 in overall rebounding.
Young had quite the game, recording the only double-double of the game, while holding game highs in rebounding, scoring and blocking. She finished the afternoon with 18 points, 13 rebounds, six blocks and a Lynx-high four assists alongside Whiteside. Whiteside and Downey both recorded 12 points while
Alyssa Owens accumulated 11 points.
The Lynx return home to host Birmingham-Southern on Friday for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
