Memphis - Rhodes women's basketball ran out to a 13-2 lead over visiting Birmingham-Southern Friday night as the Lynx played in front of a packed house, honoring Rhodes College Faculty and Staff.
A timeout by BSC just over two minutes into the game proved effective as the Panthers pulled within two of Rhodes by the end of the first period. The Lynx pulled ahead by five points, their largest of the second period (21-16) but seven straight BSC points gave the Panthers a two-point lead. Rhodes secured the final five points of the half, all from
Lindsey Whiteside to give the Lynx a 26-23 halftime advantage.
An
Alyssa Owens three-pointer gave Rhodes a three-point lead 30 seconds into the second half, their largest lead of the half. BSC closed out the third period with five points to lead 40-34. Rhodes trailed 46-39 with five minutes to play. Two free throws and a layup brought the Lynx within three with 3:45 to go. After BSC missed a trey attempt, Whiteside brought down a defensive rebound, which turned into a game-tying three-pointer from Owens, which erupted the Lynx faithful. The Panthers took a seven-point lead, but after a Lynx layup and Panther turnover, Rhodes pulled within three after
Kiera Downey scored on a fastbreak from Owens' steal.
With Rhodes forced to foul, BSC sank one of their two free throws before
Alli Mayeux lit up the scoreboard with her fourth trey of the night from deep. The freshman sank the shot to pull Rhodes within one halfway between the arc and half court. BSC sank a free throw to go up by two, but a costly turnover from Mayeux on the inbounds with a second left forced Rhodes to foul with the Panthers winning 59-55.
Mayeux recorded her first career double-double in the game. She tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds after sinking four of 11 trey attempts. Owens also recorded 15 points and recorded six assists. Downey finished the game with 12 points while Whiteside added another five assists to Rhodes' totals.
The Lynx, who are 9-6 on the year and 2-2 in conference, will host Millsaps on Sunday, January 13 at 1 p.m.
