Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lynx Record Highest Score in Seven Years as Millsaps Falls for First Time in SAA Play This Year

Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball came out on all cylinders Sunday afternoon. After a heartbreaking loss to Birmingham-Southern Friday night, the Lynx opened the first half against Millsaps College with a 41-24 lead. Before today's game, the Majors were 4-0 among Southern Athletic Association competition, but Rhodes had other plans for the visiting squad.

Rhodes earned a 33-point spread after a putback from senior Moriah Muhammad ended the third period with the Lynx ahead 70-37. Muhammad had tallied eight points and four rebounds during that period as Rhodes out-scored the Majors 29-13, going 12-of-17 for 70.6% accuracy during the first part of the second half.

Rhodes' hot hands continued in the fourth period as the team drained half of their 12 field goals while converting nine of 14 free throws. Each team opened their possessions with three-pointers with the Lynx scoring seven unanswered points. Rhodes earned their largest lead of the game as time was winding down. With 49 seconds to play, Muhammad netted a free throw to give the Lynx a 46-point advantage.

During the game, Muhammad tallied a season-high 17 points to go along with her eight rebounds. Alyssa Owens recorded 16 points in the win, draining four of her five three-point attempts and improving her season free throw average to 90.7% after making all four attempts. Lindsey Whiteside and Ellen Hagen both scored 11 points as the duo combined to go 5-of-10 from three-point range. Kiera Downey also netted double digits (10) for the Lynx, scoring four of her five field goal attempts.

Rhodes shot 55% in the field, 41.7% from behind the arc and 63% from the free throw line. They limited their turnovers to 11 compared to Millsaps' 19 and also out-rebounded their opponents 37-25. Millsaps struggled to score during the game, averaging 28.3% overall. Major Morgan McCrea led the game with 20 points.

Rhodes' 93-49 victory over Millsaps is the highest number of points scored by the Lynx since an overtime game on January 27, 2012. On that day, the Lynx defeated Trinity in overtime 97-90. Rhodes' last win over 93 points in regulation was at Sewanee on New Year's Day, 2010 (100-92). The Lynx are now 10-6 on the year and 3-2 in SAA play.

The Lynx are at home again this weekend, hosting Oglethorpe on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by Berry College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
