Danville, Ky. - Entering the first conference game of 2019, Rhodes and Centre women's basketball both held 8-4 overall records after opening SAA play with a victory. The Colonels prevailed on Friday night, downing Rhodes 60-56.
Â
Rhodes jumped out to a 15-point lead before Centre rallied back. The Colonels' full-court press, coupled with multiple Lynx fouls, and a hot-shooting Kathleen Wilson from behind the arc, limited Rhodes' lead to two points at halftime.
Â
Centre pulled away with an 11-point run after three consecutive three-pointers to lead 39-32 four minutes into the second half. Rhodes answered with a 12-2 run with 10 of those points coming from Lynx freshman, including a trey each by
Kiera Downey and
Ellen Hagen, as well as a layup and two free throws from
Alli Mayeux to give Rhodes a 44-42 advantage. The Lynx led 48-45 after three periods. Â
Â
Centre tied the game 54-54 with 4:18 to play. After a scoreless minute, both teams scored within 16 seconds with Centre taking a 56-55 advantage. Lynx sophomore
Lindsey Whiteside tied the game on a free throw with under two minutes to go, however a Rhodes foul sent Centre to the free throw line for a one-point lead. With their shot clock about to expire, the Lynx put up a desperation layup and a defensive rebound by the hosts allowed Centre to take a three-point advantage with 39 seconds to play. The Lynx used their final timeout and failed to convert a long-range attempt. Rhodes was forced to foul on the rebound, which Centre converted to a four-point lead and eventual victory. Â Â
Â
Rhodes shot 45% in the game overall, however Centre made eight treys and secured 18 of 28 free throws. The Lynx held a 38-31 board advantage, but committed 13 turnovers compared to Centre's five.
Â
Senior
Allie Young narrowly missed a double-double after she recorded 18 points and nine rebounds. Centre's Wilson led the game with 21 points after making three of five three-point attempts. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
Â
The Lynx will now head to Sewanee for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
