Danville, Ky. - Tied 5-5, Rhodes men's basketball went on a 14-4 run to open their second conference game of the season at Centre College Friday night. The Lynx are now 3-10 on the year and 0-2 in conference play after their 68-61 loss to the Colonels. Centre is now 11-2 overall and 2-0 among SAA competition.
After their 19-9 lead, Rhodes led 21-13 until Centre tallied seven straight points to pull within one point. The two teams were tied 24-24 at halftime. During the first half, senior
Daniel Darst led Rhodes with nine points, connecting on three of his four field goals and free throws while freshman
Kevin Shen brought down five rebounds. The Lynx shot 36% during the half compared to Centre's 28.6%, however Rhodes turned the ball over 10 times.
Centre scored first to open the second half and took a 38-30 lead until Rhodes posted six unanswered points to pull within two points. The Lynx then trailed 50-42 until 10 straight points gave the visitors a two-point lead with seven minutes left in the game. The two teams tied at 54 points each when
Kevin Shen hit a trey to give the Lynx a three-point lead. The teams then tied at 60 points before Centre secured a layup with 1:19 to go.
Centre converted a free throw, afterwhich
Owen Galvin drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 61 points with 54 seconds remaining. A Colonel offensive rebound turned into a three-point play after a good layup and free throw on a Lynx foul. With the Lynx down 64-61, a costly turnover with 18 seconds left forced Rhodes to foul once again, which Centre converted to a seven-point victory after another Rhodes foul.
In the game, the Lynx were led by Darst who tallied the game-high 17 points and seven rebounds. He went five-of-seven and made six of eight free throws. Shen finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists while Galvin recorded 10 points in the game. Overall, Rhodes shot 42% overall and made seven of 21 three-point attempts (33.3%).
Centre was led by Jacob Bates with 16 points and Perry Ayers with 14 points. The Colonels shot 35.5% in the field and 20% from long range.
The Lynx turn their attention to Sunday's road contest at Sewanee at 3 p.m.
