Atlanta, Ga. – Opening the second half of the conference season, Rhodes College women's basketball suffered a 65-55 loss on the road to defending tournament champs, Oglethorpe University. Oglethorpe improves to 15-4 overall and 6-2 in conference while the Lynx fall to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Rhodes led 9-7 after an
Alyssa Owens made bucket, but the Stormy Petrels connected on two free throws and a three-pointer to end the first period with a 12-11 advantage. The hosts continued to connect behind the arc and scored three treys and two layups to lead 25-14. Oglethorpe then took a 37-26 halftime advantage.
During the first half, Owens led the Lynx with eight points while
Moriah Muhammad pulled down five rebounds. Rhodes only made one of six trey attempts and shot 36% in the field overall. Oglethorpe forced eight Lynx turnovers and shot 42% in the field.
Muhammad scored with a basket as Rhodes opened the second half on a 7-2 run, but the Stormy Petrels held a 53-40 advantage headed into the final frame.
Rhodes scored six straight points to cut Oglethorpe's lead to seven (54-47) with five minutes to play. The Lynx pulled within four with 40 seconds until free throws helped Oglethorpe run out the clock.
Owens led Rhodes with 16 points while Muhammad and
Lindsey Whiteside both tallied nine rebounds. Whiteside also recorded 10 points and four assists.
The Lynx will now travel to Berry College for a 1 p.m. ET tip-off on Sunday.
